Nasal vaccination has been known for long time. The picture shows nasal vaccination against smallpox in China about 1000 years ago. The procedure was called variolation. The aim was to prevent smallpox by inserting powdered scabs from smallpox pustules into the nose. Nasal vaccination is today considered to be more effective than vaccination by injection. |

Immunologists have realized that about 90% of the cells in the immune system reside in the mucosa. This can be seen as a reaction to the fact that about 90% of all pathogens (viruses, bacteria) enter our bodies via the mucosal surfaces (the nose, the gut, the rectum and the vagina) The Eurocine™-vaccines take advantage of the mucosal immune system, the body’s first line of defence against pathogens. The immune system connected to the mucosa can prevent infections by viruses and bacteria by blocking their adhesion and penetration while they are still external to the epithelial barrier. However, nasal vaccines in most cases need to be combined with special vaccine technologies to give a good protective effect after administration. Eurocine has developed two different vaccine technologies, one that is used with classic vaccines (i.e. influenza, diphtheria, etc) and another which exerts its effect when combined with DNA-plasmids. |
